On Mother’s Day, Coffee Shop Ignores Restrictions

Despite #socialdistancing guidelines currently in place, honoring Mom took center stage on Mother’s Day at the C&C Coffee shop in Castle Rock, Colorado.

Nick Puckett (@Nick_Puckett) tweeted a video showing the cafe full of patrons ignoring the 6 feet rule, not wearing masks and definitely touching their faces.

What a comfortable, familiar scene. In stark contrast to the messages from the medical front, where the battle against Covid-19 rages on.

Hoist by Your Own Petard

Someone had to be the first to push back.

What looked like a brave move by the cafe owners on Sunday, didn’t look so successful on Monday. Consequences were delivered for their bold defiance.

NPR: “I expected it to be busy. I never expected this,” owner April Arellano told the Castle Rock News-Press on Sunday. “I’m so happy so many people came out to support the Constitution and stand up for what is right. We did our time. We did our two weeks. We did more than two weeks … and we were failing. We had to do something.”

But the local health department shut down the restaurant Monday, saying its owners had ignored a warning not to open their dining room. A Colorado Restaurant Hosted A Crowd On Mother’s Day. It’s Now Been Closed Down

Whoops! I wish I felt as confident about ignoring Coronavirus precautions. The world is not in agreement. The customers in this coffee shop have no respect for social distance 101.

No Submission Without Position

In the language of jiu jitsu, “There’s no submission without position”.

Losing so quickly illustrates this lesson. Who has more power?

The Health Dept. is in position to deliver consequences. The coffee shop owners had their Mother’s Day fun, but were soundly defeated on Monday.

There’s only a consequence to the customers if they spread the Coronavirus or start showing symptoms. The cafe owners took a risk with their business. Hopefully, they can continue serving in a more limited capacity.

Was it worth it?
