Back in 2016, while Jared Porter worked as a Professional Scout for the Chicago Cubs, he sent over 60, increasingly explicit, text messages to a female reporter. She ignored him, hoping he would give up and move on to someone one else.
January 2021 Update: “New York Mets general manager Jared Porter sent explicit, unsolicited texts and images to a female reporter in 2016, culminating with a picture of an erect, naked penis, according to a copy of the text history obtained by ESPN.
The woman, a foreign correspondent who had moved to the United States to cover Major League Baseball, said at one point she ignored more than 60 messages from Porter before he sent the final lewd photo.” ESPN
Perfect Example of the Creepy Wally attack
Jared’s behavior perfectly illustrates the Creepy Wally Attack. When someone is all over you like a cheap suit, taking up too much space, invading your privacy and putting his needs before yours, Creepy Wally is in play.
To earn your trust (or to generate interest), the man sends a naked image first, hoping you will respond in kind. Frisky Business: Revenge Porn

Hoist by His Own Petard
Four years later, his messages were shared in public, on the internet. Shamed and disapproved of, Jared Porter lost his new job (after 38 days) as General Manager of the NY Mets baseball team. It took some time, but eventually, Jared got blown up by his own bomb (hubris and disrespect).
ESPN apparently set a trap for Jared during their conversation. He initially offered details of the texting, but then suddenly clammed up when he realized that ESPN planned to report the story.
“Reached by ESPN on Monday evening, Porter acknowledged texting with the woman. He initially said, he had not sent any pictures of himself. When told the exchanges show he had sent selfies and other pictures, he said that ‘the more explicit ones are not of me. Those are like, kinda like, joke-stock images.’
After asking whether ESPN was planning to run a story, he asked for more time before later declining further comment.”
Ooops! That is a perfect display of being hoist by your own petard. He’s so confident that his behavior was “funny” that he didn’t consider the trap he set up — and then fell into.

Never operate from anger. In this case, four years passed before the time was right for the female journalist to make her move.
Position: Go to neutral. Then with careful consideration, take action.
First: Get someone in your corner who believes you. ESPN saw proof. They vetted the info before publishing the story. This information ruined Jared Porter’s reputation and had a negative impact on his career. ESPN served as the Pivot Person.
Second: Use the Eddie Attack. Get people on your side to support you in your fight to regain your respect. Do not attempt to fight this battle on your own.
Third: Forgive yourself. This wasn’t your fault. At the time, the decisions you made were the best you could do.
Timing is Everything
ESPN has had this information since 2017.
The woman is afraid of repercussions and doesn’t want her name revealed.
ESPN reports that after experiencing extended anxiety worrying that she might bump into Jared Porter on an assignment, the woman abandoned her sports career, returning to her home country.
She now works in finance.
In the ESPN article (referenced above), the woman explained why she came forward now. “My number one motivation is, I want to prevent this from happening to someone else…Obviously, he’s in a much greater position of power. I want to prevent that from happening again. The other thing is, I never really got the notion that he was truly sorry. I know in the US, there is a women’s empowerment movement. But, in [my home country], it’s still far behind…Women get dragged through the mud if your name is associated with any type of sexual scandal. Women are the ones who get fingers pointed at them. I don’t want to go through the victimization process again. I don’t want other people to blame me.” #metoo

The game I call Demon Spotting developed over time as I worked through emotional entanglements and confusing break-ups. My misery became code words. Code words became mat drills. Mat drills became winning combinations. And my confusion lifted. Consider this your invitation to play. Clarity is freedom.
